  • Overview

    The Director of Accounting is responsible for performing, coordinating, and leading Common Sail’s daily general accounting and financial reporting activities including A/R and A/P.  The Director of Accounting is also responsible for hiring, leading, developing, and empowering members of the accounting team. It is expected that the Director of Accounting will ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and completeness of all accounting related activities. 


    Required Experience for a Director of Accounting:

    • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent work experience in a leadership accounting position
    • Four (4) to six (6) years of experience as a Director of Accounting or in a leadership accounting position 
    • Previous experience working with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and other regulatory agencies
    • Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP
    • Able to work under pressure and to consistently meet tight deadlines within a fast-paced business environment
    • Excellent communication and leadership skills are mandatory

    Responsibilities for a Director of Accounting:

    • LMA- Provide effective coaching, mentoring and development for all team employees
    • Deliver 1440 experience by building and maintaining strong relationships internally and externally
    • Communicates clear expectations and sets the standards
    • Provides technical accounting GAAP guidance and support to all company entities
    • Responsible for internal and external financial reporting
    • Responsible for the timeliness and accuracy of financial reports, and ensures that the reports are actionable and meaningful to the end user
    • Ensures that financial statements are prepared and maintained in compliance with company policies and GAAP
    • Responsible for reviewing monthly/quarterly account reconciliations and other documents to ensure compliance
    • Provides financial advice by studying operational issues and providing recommendations
    • Understands and maintains the tracking of fixed assets
    • Understands revenue recognition rules including timing and application
    • Coordinates work for year-end audit process, responsible for the implementation of agreed upon recommendations resulting from audit findings
    • Exhibits expertise by compliance with all legal requirements, including existing and new legislation
    • Updates and maintains the Chart of Accounts as necessary
    • Ensures that computer systems continue to operate as required. Involved in validating/designing suggested changes to ensure accounting requirements are met
    • Works closely with the tax/compliance department, understands SOX and supports internal controls
